Barn Painting: “Galen’s Gem”

This double corn crib is one of the largest corn barns in Whitley County and its two wooden cupolas add flair. Sitting on top of a knoll, overlooking a road winding through corn fields, the barn isn’t as old as most of its neighbors, going back only to 1945. The unique feature that sets it apart is the elevator inside the barn that lifts corn on a conveyer belt and feeds it into a wagon or truck.

Galen and Betty Wilkinson have owned this farm since 1989 and raise corn and soybeans on its 740 acres. In addition, Galen generously donated several antique tractors and farm equipment and tools to the Agricultural Museum, which impressed me when I first came to Columbia City.
